What is Akuafoil and How Do I Set It Up?

Frequently Asked Questions

Akuafoil is a unique printing technique that allows you to transform a wide range of CMYK colors into vibrant, multicolored foil effects. Using a specially processed foil system applied beneath a 4-color process (CMYK), Akuafoil creates stunning foil finishes in a variety of colors. This method is affordable, easy to set up, and makes your printed materials stand out with a premium, eye-catching appearance.

Setting Up Your Akuafoil Artwork

To create an Akuafoil job, you'll need to prepare two separate files:

  1. A standard CMYK print file.
  2. An Akuafoil mask file, which specifies where the foil will be applied.

The mask file should follow these rules:

  • Use 100% K (black) in the areas where you want the Akuafoil effect.
  • Use white in the areas where the Akuafoil effect is not applied.

For example, if your CMYK file contains a logo you want to highlight with Akuafoil, your mask file should have the logo represented in 100% K (black) while the rest of the design remains white. Ensure that the CMYK file and the mask file are perfectly aligned in size and position. Upload these files separately when placing your order.

Tips for Creating Akuafoil Artwork

  • Best Colors: Akuafoil works best on lighter CMYK colors. Darker colors tend to reduce the vibrancy of the foil effect.
  • Text and Artwork: Avoid using very thin or small text or designs. For optimal results, use sans-serif fonts sized 12 points or larger.
  • Plain Silver Effect: Applying Akuafoil to white areas will create a plain silver foil look.
  • Vector-Based Files: To ensure the highest quality, create your mask files using vector-based programs like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW.
  • Silver Foil Quality: If you want a rich silver Akuafoil effect, add at least 15% K in the CMYK area for enhanced results.

Preventing the "Halo" Effect

When creating knockouts (areas where foil or ink does not overlap), a white "halo" may appear between the CMYK ink and the Akuafoil. To minimize this:

  1. Expand or stroke the Akuafoil area in the mask file by 1 point to allow it to bleed slightly into the CMYK area.
  2. Fill the knockout with a color to reduce the halo effect even further.

For example, in a magenta background with Akuafoil text knocked out, growing the Akuafoil mask area slightly or filling the knockout space can help achieve a seamless look.

By following these guidelines, you can achieve stunning Akuafoil results that elevate the look of your printed materials.
